Importing images

Uploading new image files for a product, from the product's Images tab or the guided Import images page.

There are two ways to add image files to a product. Both do the same thing: each file becomes a new product image on BigCommerce, gets the colour label you chose, and is placed after the product's existing images in file-name order.

From the product's Images tab

  1. Open the product, then its Images tab.
  2. Press Import by colour. The dialog Import images by colour opens.
  3. Pick the colour the images are for. The product's own colours are listed under This product's colours; every other colour label under Other colours. Press Next: choose files.
  4. Drop files onto the drop zone or press Choose files.
  5. Press Import N images.

The dialog shows each file's progress: Waiting, Uploading…, Done, Failed or Skipped. Cancel stops after the file that is uploading now. When it finishes it sums up, for example 3 imported, 1 skipped. Closing the dialog refreshes the page if anything was imported.

From the Import images page

Open Scenarios › Import images in the left menu. The page walks you through three steps:

  1. Product. Search by SKU, by name, or across all fields, and pick a product. Change product starts over.
  2. Colour. Type to narrow the list and pick a colour. If the store has no colour labels yet, the page says so and points you to Image settings.
  3. Images. The same drop zone and progress list as the dialog. When it is done, Import for another product and Go to product take you onward.

If you try to leave the page while files are still going up, the browser asks Images are still going up. Leave this page anyway? Leaving does not stop the upload that is already running; you only lose the progress view.

Accepted files

JPEG, PNG, WebP and GIF files up to 8 MB each. Anything else is marked Skipped with the reason, such as Not a JPEG, PNG, WebP or GIF image. or Larger than 8 MB (BigCommerce's limit).

When something goes wrong

Failure messages say what happened and what to do. One case deserves care: when BigCommerce may have accepted the file but its answer could not be read, the message asks you to check the product's images in BigCommerce before trying again, so you do not upload the same image twice.

Importing is switched off while the All writing to BigCommerce master switch is stopped. See Image settings.
